Compare & Contrast Components of The Medicare and Medicaid Programs
Select one of the following questions for your initial post, which is due before Thursday evening at 11:59 pm EST. Please copy and paste the question at the beginning of your initial response so everyone knows which question you are answering. Be sure to include a properly formatted citation from your textbook ( Shi, L., Singh, D. A., & Shi, L. (2019). Essentials of the U.S. health care system (5th Edition). Jones & Bartlett Learning.) and a peer-reviewed source for your initial post. The post should be at least 300 words.
You must also respond to one of your classmates’ posts prior to Saturday night at 11:59 pm. For follow up posts, you want to add something new to what was already posted (find a case study on the topic and summarize the findings, find a research study and share the statistical findings with the class, provide a real world example of the topic to the class, etc). The post should be at least 250 words.
- Your text lists and describes five main types of private health insurance. Select two of these and compare and contrast them. What are the similarities and differences between them?
- What are the “minimal essential benefits” that must be included in all private health insurance offered under the Affordable Care Act? What has been the impact of this requirement in terms of the cost of healthcare in the US as well as the overall health of Americans?
- This week you learned the concept of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). What is this and how is it calculated? Would the cost of health insurance be affordable for a family of 4 with an income at 150% of the FPL? 200%? Describe how the FPL is calculated and the impact of the FPL in different states (you can compare two states)
- Compare and contrast the components of the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Who is responsible for administering each? How many people are covered by each? What are the major provisions of each program?
- This week you read an article about hospital bills. Why do you think the patient wasn’t able to convince Aetna or the hospital to change the amount billed even though it was clear that the amount billed was exorbitant? If you were either an insurance or hospital executive, what changes would you make to ensure that this doesn’t happen in the future?
