Lesson post week 6 on the importance of having a business continuity plan (BCP) and the disaster recovery plan and why I believe one is more critical to a healthcare organization than the other. As I stated in my post, a business continuity plan is essential to have in a medical disaster. “A predetermined set of instructions or procedures that describe how an organization’s essential functions will be sustained for up to thirty days as a result of a disaster event before returning to normal operations” (Wager et al., 2013). The plan will include trained medical staff to handle medical emergencies or possible mass casualties in a disaster. This is all trained staff involved in the management of medical resources, maintaining building systems, facilities, equipment (back-up generators), energy, water, food, fuel, spaces, and information systems, and operating funds in an emergency (Masuda, 2018). Dealing with the most recent power outage brings me back to the importance of having a business continuity plan. Texas was not prepared for the outage when it came to gas propane, energy, food, or water. This is why I would prefer to have a continuity plan in place over a disaster recovery plan. Both are essential plans for a health organization to have.

It has been my pleasure and utmost respect to learn and interact with all of you online. As we are in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) world, the lesson I will take away is Telemedicine. There was great information that has been shared by my peers and great discussion at the same time.

When healthcare turned to a full switch to Telemedicine/Telehealth, it had impacted our job from coding to billing and physician training. Telemedicine, as one of the leading tools for EHR, has now proven that it transformed how medicine works today while transporting across a typical facility wall. With the advantages of Telemedicine, that offers a variety of benefits for both patients and providers. Patients able to see their Primary Care doctors thru their phone via video chat; this tool made patients more comfortable. It saved patients tons of time to spend less in clinics, hospitals and, at the same time, lower costs. Telemedicine has reached the patient to have a quality and improve access to care, especially those with disabilities, older adults who are geographically isolated, and patients with chronic conditions needing prescription refills.

And on the other hand, the positive impact to the healthcare providers which they see their patients happier for saving time. Telemedicine benefits patient safety, so it does protect healthcare providers. More so, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) loosened the regulations for this tool in response to the pandemic. Telemedicine may now be the new way to deliver care and post-pandemic.

The pandemic has shaken the world, and the healthcare system (HCS) was disrupted and had expanded its role in both public and private sectors. And according to Sandran et al. (2020), Public and private HCS’s worldwide should apply the following lessons in response to the pandemic “1)Improve patient health outcomes by defining appropriate care for specific population segments 2) Implement new care models, realigning resources to rethink the way that health care is delivered 3) Apply digital solutions more widely 4) Revamp governance and policy to define shared goals and improve decision making 5) Adopt standardized data and analytics across a broader range of use cases”(para 2). And as far as the US government should not stop investing and finding solutions to manage and future emergency measures in HCS.
