Organizational Planning Walt Disney

Organizational Planning Walt Disney

Main Post

Organizational planning starts with following the planning hierarchy discussed in Marquis and Huston (2017), beginning with defining the organizational mission, philosophy, goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and rules. The mission statement provides the purpose of the company and is a brief statement that identifies its unique differentiator (Marquis et al., 2017). The vision statement provides insight into the aims of the organization and guides leaders and employees towards that overarching goal (Marquis et al., 2017). These two aspects are essential for candidates to consider when exploring potential employers and patients when shopping for healthcare providers. This discussion post will examine the different mission and vision statements for non-profit, for-profit healthcare facilities and a non-healthcare facility, and the analysis that can be gained by closely examining these statements.

Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center

Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center (PSHMSHMC; 2019) is a rural academic medical center located in central Pennsylvania. This non-profit facility is a part of the Penn State Health system. The mission of PSHMSHMC (2019) is a “commitment to enhancing the quality of life through improved health, the professional preparation of those who will serve the health needs of others, and the discovery of knowledge that will benefit all” (para. 1). Their vision is “inspiriting innovation to be the best at improving health” (PSHMSHMC, 2019, para. 2).

There is an emphasis on training the future generations of healthcare providers, which aligns with its academic affiliation with Penn State University. The facility has invested a significant amount of funding towards advancing research in cancer treatments and other complex medical conditions for the benefit of all members of its community. PSHMSHMC’s statements are brief and concise and emphasize the importance of finding new methods to deliver high-quality healthcare.

St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children

St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children is located in Philadelphia, Pa, and is a for-profit facility that provides inpatient pediatric care. The mission is two-fold for the facility: 1) to provide high-quality health care services to all children and youth up to the age of 21 and 2) integrate teaching and research to provide excellence in care “in an efficient, cost-effective manner that serves the best interests of our patients, their families and the community” (St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, 2018, para. 3)

The vision of the facility is “to be the best children’s medical center by attaining excellence in patient care, education, and research. We are committed to providing high-quality, family-centered care in a collaborative, nurturing and culturally diverse environment. We will continue to value, attract and retain the best people while satisfying our mission through the use of state-of-the-art technological advances in research and constant innovation” (St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, 2018, para. 3).

The analysis for this for-profit organization is that the organization chose lengthy statements to convey its purpose and goals for the future. It emphasizes the importance of making fiscally responsible decisions to the benefit of the community as well as its stakeholders. The facility serves the community’s children but has a calling to educate future healthcare providers and implement research to provide high-quality care.

The Walt Disney Company

The mission statement for The Walt Disney Company (2020) is “to entertain, inform and inspire people around the globe through the power of unparalleled storytelling, reflecting the iconic brands, creative minds and innovative technologies that make ours the world’s premier entertainment company” (para. 1). The vision statement is “to be one of the world’s leading producers and providers of entertainment and information” (MSA, 2019, para. 11).

Disney is a company that has acquired previous competitors, highly sought after media content, partners with diverse media networks, and expanded to multinational entertainment parks. This mission and vision statements are clear and concise and clearly articulates the long-term goal. The vision provides insight into the direction of the company and is reflective in the recent expansion to a digital streaming option with Disney+. The center of these statements is providing people with a magical experience anytime and anyplace.

Summary

As evidenced through the variability in the mission and vision statements, each company has different goals, which governs the daily work of their employees. Despite their differences, the purpose is clear and provides insight into the future of the businesses. Defining the mission and vision of a company first is essential as these statements guide future decisions and influence the remaining components of the planning hierarchy.
