YOUR PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY AND AUTHORITY OVERVIEW Part of the assigned readings in your textbook this week concerns your professional identity. According to Kearney-Nunnery (2012), one characteristic of a professional nurse is authority. Authority occurs through education and experience which give the professional the knowledge and skills to make professional judgments (Kearney-Nunnery, 2012, p. 4). The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has documented nine Essentials that define outcomes expected of nurses who graduate from baccalaureate nursing programs. Please click on the link to review these essentials: It is listed under resources: position statements. (If the link does not work, do an internet search to locate the AACNs BSN Essentials online.) Essential VIII concerns professionalism and professional values and states that the nurse must demonstrate professionalism and maintain competency through lifelong learning. DIRECTIONS: Post an initial response answering the following questions by 11:55 PM Wednesday of Week 1: 1. Are you certified in any specialty? 2. If you are, why did you choose to become certified? Be specific. 3. If you are not certified, why have you not sought certification? Be specific. 4. Based on the review of the scholarly literature and your own nursing experience, what have you identified as barriers and challenges to certification? 5. What have you identified as benefits and incentives to certification? 6. What impact do you expect your BSN to have on your professional role? You are not being asked for your personal opinion. Please note that in Spring-A sessions, some due dates my be changed.
