During the first part of this course, we covered pre-history up to the end of the classical period, or around 500 C.E. In the last third of the course we will be covering the modern period, which begins around 1450-1550 C.E. and includes revolutions in politics, warfare, economics, trade, technologies, and many aspects of culture.
For this exam, your assignment is to write the script for a 10 to 15 minute video segment explaining, from your viewpoint, what happened in the world between the end of the classical period and the modern-world historical period. Your audience is to be sophomore and junior class high school students who have not yet taken a World History class. Your segment fits between two 20 to 25 minute segments of a one-hour video program, the first segment on early history up to and including the classical period, the third segment on the modern period. There is far too much history that fits into what is known as the Middle Ages for Europeans. Therefore, each of you should pick only two or three subjects to address in your script (or paper if you prefer). These could include, but are not limited to, Empires, Science, Religion, Geography, Education, Travel, Art, Gender, Slavery, or even Philosophy. You pick the subjects to write about. Make it interesting to me and to a 15-17 year old brother or niece. And definitely try it out by reading it out loud to yourself, and to a classmate, roommate, friend, or family member, before turning it in.
Your script/paper must be 5 to 8 pages in length. You need a title for your script on the first page, but you do not need other name(s) or course identifiers.
Your response for this exam assignment must be submitted as a typical college paper. It must be a Word document, with one inch margins on all sides, double spaced (unlike this exam specification), using 12 point Times New Roman font. Your last name and the page number must appear in the top right corner in the header of each page. If you use quotations or ideas from our textbook, Ways of the World, you may simply put the appropriate page number (i.e. (275)) at the end of the sentence using the quote or idea. When using any other source, whether a book, magazine or journal article, website, video, or whatever, you must properly cite the source using MPA or Chicago style footnotes.
