Reading the first of the assigned reading it is obvious that Johnathan Anderson in An Open Letter to Dirty Hands Theorists from a Public Manager provides great insight to some of the hypocrisy in peace and security being in even competition. It is truly amazing when these conversations are had very seldom does the conversation stay on topic, as it diverts into other areas of the public sector. Andersen writes Under the guise of national security threats, and through the rhetoric of terrorism, the process of democratic law and the idea of constitutional limits are under attack. (Anderson, 2014. P. 305) This is evident of the Patriot Act (2001), the National Defense Authorization Act (2018), and the USA Freedom Act. (2015) All of these are attention diverter that highlight the need for higher operation of a police state in guise of defense of a nation. Everyone knows that the department of homeland security has done nothing to thwart terror attacks as outlined in their mission statement. (Zimmerman, 2011) The Transport Security Administration has done nothing but allow sexual harassment to take place in airports and other forms of travel. (Zimmerman, 2011) Taking the observations of Zimmerman surrounding events that have taken place even after the onset of these agencies statistics show that the results have been minimal when compared to the amount of money that has been used to operate these entities of government. This aspects of government gets support from those who, also argue in favor of gun restrictions on law abiding citizens. The numbers available surrounding how more law abiding citizens decrease crime numbers in any community. The FBI always releases its statistics on homicide and this information shows that talking about rifles are far less dangerous than knives and hammers.(FBI, 2015) When you have the information it is easy to decimate any argument in support of weapon restrictions or more government. Now this refers to the argument of weapons however the point is to review the information prior to formulating an opinion. Also coming back to the content of the conversation this week, I dont know why its always a question about peace and security because the issue has been discussed for many years yet there is still misunderstanding. Admittedly there is a risk in any course we follow other than this, but every lesson in history tells us that the greater risk lies in appeasement. (Reagan, 1964) Continuing their policy of accommodation is appeasement, and it gives no choice between peace and war, only between fight and surrender. (Reagan, 1964) this message given in 1964 holds as much truth now as it did then. If you continually give into those who oppose your position there is no victory. Now the problem arises when those who say we have to think a certain way, that undermines the principles of individual liberty and national sovereignty, which is where the point exist that no compromise can be made. The conversation can again go on forever with this topic, but it reverts to one simple principle which is what all conversations surrounding public administration should ascertain the foundation of thought. We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. (Madison, 1787) When you align these principles against the current affairs of the public sector of America, a comparison can be made. If the intentions and values are aligned with the precepts of the preamble, your argument is fundamentally sound, and if not it holds no power. Anderson, J. (2014).
