Capstone: Week 4 Discussion: Writing Research Questions
In your initial post, write three research questions which align with your proposal.
● Purposefully write two poorly formed questions and explain why each question does not meet the criterion for a well-built question. Use PICO, FINER, or FINERMAPS to describe how the question goes awry.
● Finally, write one well-built researc h question that could be used in your proposal and demonstrate how the question uses the model (PICO, FINER, or FINERMAPS).
● The questions must relate to diversity, equity, or inclusion in some way.
Note: What Is Your Question?
What constitutes a well-built research question or program evaluation question? Hilton
et al. (2020) suggest use of the PICO framework (Population, Intervention, Control or
Comparison, Outcome) to write a research question. You reviewed other frameworks.
Fandino (2019) presents the FINER framework (Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical,
and Relevant) and Ratan, Anand, and Ratan (2019) expand FINER to FINERMAPS
(Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical, Relevant, Manageable, Appropriate, Potential
value, and Systematic).
Which framework do you find most helpful? Which framework will assist you in writing a
narrowly defined, specific question?
This week, you will differentiate between what makes a well-built, answerable research
question or program evaluation question and what does not. The activities this week
include a short quiz on research and program evaluation questions and a discussion
activity in which you will write two poorly formed questions and explain why they are in
error and craft one well-built question that could be used in your proposal.
